Sunday, June 20, 2010

Despite the first and second films in the series coming out in 1995 and 1999 respectively, the "Toy Story" franchise is still alive in the kids today. That's evident from the success of part three over the weekend, which beat out every other film by at least $80 million.

Yes, "Toy Story 3" ruled the weekend box office, raking in a staggering $109 million to start, beating out last week's #1 "The Karate Kid", as well as the new Megan Fox flick "Jonah Hex."

According to the Associated Press, "TS3" became the third animated film to top $100 million in the first weekend, joining "Shrek the Third" at $121.6 million, and "Shrek 2" at $108 million.

It was also the best debut for a film from Disney's Pixar Animation, topping "The Incredibles" at $70.5 million. The last weekend's top film, "The Karate Kid," taking in $29 million to raise its 10-day total to $106.3 million.

Then, "The A-Team" lands at #3 with $13.7 million; "Get Him to the Greek" comes in at #4 with $6.1 million; and "Shrek Forever After" rounds out the top 5 with $5.5 million.

That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of the Adam Sandler comedy "Grown Ups", and the comedy "Knight & Day" starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.
